About playwhitenoise
playwhitenoise is a free online white-noise player for sleep, focus and relaxation. It is an independent project — no ads, no accounts, no upsells. You pick a sound, it plays, and it keeps playing with your screen off or fades out on a sleep timer.
How the sounds are made
All 16 sounds are synthesized by our own audio engine rather than recorded in the field. The seven noise colours (white, pink, brown, green, grey, blue and violet) are generated from their textbook frequency curves, and the ambiences — rain, ocean, wind, fireplace and the rest — are built from layered, shaped noise. Every loop is rendered losslessly and crossfaded so it repeats without a click or a gap. We say this openly because many sites imply their nature sounds are field recordings; ours are crafted to capture the character of the real thing.
How we handle sleep and health claims
Sound and sleep is an area with more enthusiasm than evidence. Where our guides touch on sleep, babies or tinnitus, we hedge claims to what research actually supports, and we cite the sources — such as Cleveland Clinic, Sleep Foundation and peer-reviewed reviews — directly on the page. playwhitenoise is a relaxation aid, not a medical device or treatment. If you have a sleep disorder, tinnitus or concerns about an infant, talk to a qualified clinician.
Who runs this
playwhitenoise is made and maintained by a small independent team — the same people who write the guides sign off on the audio engine. The player is free to use and works in any modern browser, with no app to install and nothing to sign up for.
